Critical Rules: Eating & Drinking

  • 12-Hour Fast: Do NOT eat or drink anything for 12 hours prior to your procedure. This includes water, coffee, juice, gum, or mints.

  • Why this matters: Eating or drinking before receiving IV anesthesia can cause food or liquid to enter your lungs while you are sedated, which can lead to a serious, life-threatening medical complication.

Medications, Smoking & Alcohol

    • Morning Medications: The morning of your appointment, you may take critical morning medications (such as blood pressure medicine) with a very small sip of water.

    • Pain Medications: Do not take any narcotic pain medications unless specifically instructed by Dr. Chow.

    • Caffeine: Avoid caffeine in all forms (coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, or chocolate) for 12 hours prior to your appointment. Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system and can limit the level of sedation we can safely achieve.

    • Alcohol & Smoking: Avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 hours prior to your procedure, as both can unpredictably affect how your body metabolizes the sedation.

If you are unsure about which of your regular daily medications to take, please call our office ahead of time.

    What to Wear and Bring

    • Clothing: Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. It is essential to wear short sleeves (or sleeves that can be easily rolled up past the elbow) so our team can safely access your arm to start the IV and place monitoring cuffs.

    • Footwear: Wear comfortable, stable footwear such as flat shoes, socks, or slippers.

    • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment. Please wear your glasses instead.

    • Valuables: Leave all jewelry, watches, and valuables at home.

Mandatory: Your Companion and Ride Home

You cannot drive yourself home after receiving IV sedation.

    • A Responsible Adult: You must arrange for a responsible adult companion to drive you to our office, stay nearby for the entire duration of your procedure, and drive you home afterward.

    • At-Home Care: Your companion should plan to stay with you at home until the sedative completely wears off.

    • Post-Op Restrictions: IV anesthesia causes prolonged drowsiness and slows your reflexes. For the remainder of the day after your procedure, you must not:

    • Operate an automobile, machinery, or heavy equipment.

    • Be responsible for the care of children.

    • Make important personal, legal, or business decisions.

    For Female Patients Only

    • Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding, you must inform Dr. Chow before the day of your procedure. IV anesthesia and surgical procedures can potentially complicate pregnancy or pose risks to a developing fetus.

    • Breastfeeding: If you are currently breastfeeding, you will need to pump and discard your breast milk for 24 hours following your surgery to ensure the sedation medications have entirely cleared your system.
